Grand classic

Gardening at a comfortable height is not only relaxing for the back. Eyes and nose will also cherish the delights provided by carnations and wallflowers, thyme and satureja, strawberries and tomatoes.

The planters that accompany the Brittany raised bed made from aluminium with a black powder coating offer the best growing conditions. Like the practical shelf one level below, the cover panel is made from massive teak slats. A hidden drainage system in the frame directs excess water to the ground.

Guidelines for planting

A sieve ensures the flow of water from the container. In order to prevent it from becoming blocked with soil, the following guidelines should be considered when planting:

Expanded clay granules or pottery shards should be used to create a drainage base layer. Fill approximately one quarter of the planter. Cover this with a layer of fleece. The fleece keeps the soil and base layers apart, and so prevents particles from being washed into the drainage layer and obstructing the flow of water. Now fill the remainder of the container with soil (c. 120 litres). To increase the circulation of air in the planter, the soil can by all means be mixed with granules of expanded clay. The freshly planted container should then be well watered.

The material used for the Bretagne raised bed is suitable for all plants fruiting above ground such as tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, peppers, herbs, chillies, also diverse lettuce, etc. The planter is not suitable for rooting vegetables, as the aluminium material does not allow for sufficient aeration.
